It looks like Vietnam over again - it's battle that we and the Americans are bound to lose.
As long as the Taliban persist (and they have plenty of support in the Islamic world), they will win in the end, partly because it's their country and they have nowhere else to go. Even the Americans will pull out eventually, just as the Russians did.
It's a problem for the politicians - they will want to get out without admitting that they were wrong and that it was a lost cause from the start.
