    Gervais' Derek

Post by robtheglostaram on Sat 09 Feb 2013, 11:10 am

Anyone seen the latest efforts by Gervais to try and reign back the successes of The Office and Extras?

Bitterly disappointed myself, with the only saving grace being Karl Pilkington's performance.

I think it'Äs insulting to everyone called Derek, who in my experience are the most quick witted, best looking, charming & totally lush kinds of people.

If this show was on twitter the account would be closed & the perpetrators locked up.

I did think he looks a bit like 'our Derek'.

I think it's disgusting, a cheap piss take of people with learning disabities and I hate Ricky Gervais with a passion. He knows nothing.

I'd say it's more patronising than a piss take, but it fails on every level either way. Totally underwritten and so poorly executed.

I didnt really pay attention the second one, but i thought it was the complete opposite.

Highlighting problems and issues that disabled people face with a lot of hidden messages.

I still thought it was sh*t, but it was more for that reason, that it was highlighting these problems without being funny. Was just throwing them in your face all the time.

E.g. in the first one where Derek is being told he's autistic and he basically says what difference does it make if im autistic or not, and he's told nothing basically.

In fact, it was the complete opposite of a piss take

Totally disagree. I have worked with people with learning disabilities for years. The series portrayed this group and that of old people generally in a positive light. There were some laugh out loud moments as well as some very poignant and touching moments, including the last episode when he meets his father. Very well written and well-researched. Bring on the next series Thumbs up

I have also worked with people with learning disabilities for years and I disagree with you. However, I have an intense dislike for Ricky Gervais anyway.

We will have to agree to disagree then Chicken...I think it is the best thing he has done since the Office and wouldn't be surprised to see it win a number of awards. Time will tell.....

So the Office wasn't funny Bedders??? Comedy is down to individual taste...I think a lot of tv critics view the Office as a defining moment in British comedy and one of the best series of modern times.....others hate it like you. Who do you find funny??

Can't stand Ricky Gervais. I thought The Office was OK for a couple of episodes but it ran out of steam pretty quickly and, although he obviously thinks he's the funniest man alive, nothing Gervais has done since has been as good.

Both series of the Office were funny....as were the Christams specials.....agree that things have gone down hill since for him though....

To be honest Boris...I saw 30 seconds of Derek and that was 30 seconds too much...I was not in the mood to give it any longer.

You should have NER.....bit like the Office, one minute really funny and the next a tear in your eye...the stars were Pilkington and the Care Manager who played great parts....

If this is his best since the office (which didnt amuse me one iota) then the rest of his stuff really must have been dull as dishwater.
