    All Time Favourite Album

Post by Stockport Ram on Thu 13 Jun 2013, 11:32 pm

We need a decent Saturday to sell a couple of goalies and strikers on a car boot sale, so while we wait for the british summer, I decided to look back on the music thread, and to my surprise I couldn't find anything asking about everyone's favourite album (that's a piece of vinyl for you youngsters) of all time.

I  have been thinking about my choice for a while. Is it a teenage memory which evokes a timeless emotion? Is it a modern day classic? Or is it something in between, which has stood the test of time, and yet you can (apparently) pop on your ipod and enjoy as much as anything?

According to my offspring, I should also allow CDs in this thread, although I understand that they cannot be played with a stylus.  Never mind, I am open to these bizarre new ideas.

so, go on then.......... pick your best !

A toss-up between 'Selling England by the Pound' by Genesis or 'Pawn Hearts' by Van der Graaf Generator.

Will do. I saw them live once down in Cornwall in the early 80's I think it was. They were preparing for a big nationwide tour and I expected so much but was so disappointed. Sound quality was poor and would you believe the singing a tad out of tune at times....still one of my all time favourite groups. 'In the Crowd' and 'To be Someone' are amongst my favourites of theirs.......

You can't really say that though Boz.

The Jam are from Woking and there have been some terrible entertainers from there. Peter Davidson went to school there, the Spice Girls formed there and Rick Parfitt lives near there. Henry VIII even visited the place around the time he wrote that annoying telephone hold music. So, one success, one average and three entertainment disasters proves that the Jam's album was a fluke and you should never give musicians from Woking a chance.  And it's even worse with restaurants ;)

p.s. quoting is a pain in the rear with this new forum software - or is it just an IE thing?

What do you mean Cornwall, this backs up my point....the Spice Girls were proven performers in the pop world, with numerous number ones and sell out concerts around the globe (including Scotland!!), culminating in an incredibly successful theatre production that lasted weeks before it was axed and as for Peter Davison...he was arguably the best Dr Who since..since...er...Tom Baker?? I rest my case....

I too don't like this new format, have difficulty in adding emoticons....

Felt - The Strange Idols Pattern and Other Short Stories
The Smiths - Hatful of Hollow (if i'm allowed that as it was technically a compilation)
    The Beatles - Revolver
    Radiohead - The Bends

That will do for starters. Pressed to name one and it is definetely Forever Changes.

Selected Ambient Works 85-92 by Aphex Twin.

Loads of others but I can return to this time and time again, studying music and production years ago, this inspired me to do so. Plus he wrote some of the tracks when he was 14 on synths he had programmed himself.
