    Jimmy Greaves

Post by SawleyRam on Tue 05 May 2015, 8:53 am

Amid all the fall out of the end of season blame game it has been missed on here that one of Englands former greats is in intensive care after suffering a severe stroke on Sunday. As one of those of us privileged to see the great man live I wish him and his family well. He packed more into his life than we ever could!

Scored goals for fun ( not at the baseball ground though) great player.
Hopefully Spurs do not lose two greats this year.

I remember Les Green's great catch save at 1-0 (?) from a cracking shot from Greaves. That was the catalyst to Derby being better all over the park and defeating them 5-0 in front of the largest ever crowd at the BBG. Happy days.

Greaves was the outstanding goalscorer of his era. There was no-one to touch him when it came to nicking goals from close range, usually because he'd anticipated where to be in the penalty area.

I thought he was unlucky not to play in the 1966 World Cup Final, with Roger Hunt being preferred. A case of artist and artisan if ever there was one. Away from football he was also a very funny man, and his TV show with Ian St John was great comedy.

Good luck Greavsie. I hope you pull through.

I could never tire of watching that game, Sawley. At the time we just took it in our stride. We believed we could beat anyone, and we did it with top quality attacking displays.

I consider myself very lucky to have been a youngster watching the Rams at the best time in the club's history.

That was my first ever match, and I was raving about that point-blank save so much that I missed Willie Carlin's goal, which is a shame, as he was already my hero ('cos he was little, like me, and played midfield, which I thought I did!)

If you look very closely at the third goal as Hinton takes the corner, you may just spot a very young rj in the kids corner.

What fabulous days, real pride in the shirt, not like that bunch of mercenary fairies who showed up on satdeh.

Dammit SR you have gone and made me get started again.

Will we ever see the likes again in the black and white?
