"additional guidance" to the offside rule!

Post by chicken on Mon 03 Aug 2015, 6:18 pm

    Offside rule - additional guidance

A player in an offside position shall be penalised if he:

"Clearly attempts to play a ball which is close to him when this action impacts on the opponent."

A player in an offside position shall be penalised if he:

"Makes an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball."

    And so it begins ....

"PL say new interpretation of offside rule means Benteke's goal for Liverpool against Bournemouth on Monday should not have been given.

Premier League has written to its clubs to clarify new interpretation of offside law."

Perhaps they should write to the referees too...........

    I'm sure Bournemouth are pleased!

There was no clarification needed for that one Chicken, that was offside under the new rule, the old rule and the original rule. I think the linesman must have had a breakdown to miss it, either that or it's the usual story, officials feathering their nests by looking after the big clubs

Remember the days when it was chanted something to the effect that you only had to blow on a Liverpool player to give them a free kick??

Yep I saw it, seems everyone but the officials saw it! Surprise, surprise.

Old big 'ead's reaction to that would be "if a player isn't interfering with play, why is he on the field?"

No change in this new instruction. A player inside the 6 yard box and offside when a cross comes in who makes like a statue should be given offside as the keeper will have to take account of him when deciding where to stand, how to move etc.

Seems pretty clear to me: if in an off-side position, interfere with the opposition's ability to play the ball as subtly as possible. Something to start working on in practice, clearly.

If they are not going to go back to the old rule which I think they should ...where you are offside if you are standing in a offside position full stop ( unless you are a 1970s west brom player at Elland Road LOL roll )
Then I agree with Ammy that any player in the six yard box in a offside position when the ball is played in there is offside. Regardless of him playing the ball or not.
It's a distraction to the keeper both physically and mentally if the player is a passing option.
