That result does not surprise me at all. Davis Cup history made. Very recently, which helps jogs memories and...... he appears to have developed a personality of late.

Nor me either it is the BBC after all, others achieved far more in a pretty average year for Murray, Tyson Fury, Jess Ennis, Lewis Hamilton, Joe Root, Murray has had a great career no doubt about that but last year was not his best by a distance.

Credibility every year and every poor choice of victor goes down in my eyes.

Agreed Angus.Murrayn ot had his best year but the Davis Cup for the first time since the 30s is fresh in the minds as is Fury's winning of 4 belts and then losing one within days. Jess coming back after pregnancy and wining the World Championship Heptathlon title again aws a good sporting achievement but, bubbly as she is she wasn't in the forefront most of the year. Hamilton retained his title because he had the best car.

Personally I hoped Greg Rutherford or Adam Peatty would have won it as they were individual world champions

Rutherford came back from injury and won. But that was it, like Jess Ennis, after her pregnancy.

Peaty has performed well all year. My choice.

I didn't realise Murray had a personality. Live and learn I suppose.

Despite not winning a major (possibly his huge commitment to the Davis Cup cannot have helped), he has ended the year as World Number 2.

I agree that there were more outstanding individual achievements, I would include consistency of excellence from both Mo Farah and Chris Froome in that, as well as the others mentioned.

To increase his world ranking in addition to the superhuman efforts in the Davis Cup, and to show commitment to a team in such a "lead-by-example" way, I think he has had a better year than some give him credit for. For me, his "personality" has come through in his on court performances for GB. A sheer will not to let his team down - the pressure he must have been under is enormous.

Add to that the touch of class he showed after the winning point. Maybe I am confusing "personality" with "character", and if I am, then I'll live with it.

If not Murray, I would have loved Kevin Sinfield to have won it, for very similar reasons. Sinfield's position on stage prevented him from returning to his Leeds' team mates when being lauded, but Murray was able to return to his Davis Cup Team line when he was there.

Both showed quiet humility which can often be rare in true champions.
