    RIP Johan Cruijff

Post by MadAmster on Thu 24 Mar 2016, 5:04 pm

Amazing player, incredible coach and great philosopher of the game. THAT dreadful disease strikes again.

You all know about his coaching and his playing so I will give you some of hi wisdom.

If you don't shoot you can't score.

    Every disadvantage has an advantage.

You only have one moment to be there on time, if you're not you are either too early or too late.

    On himself:

"In a way I'm probably immortal."
"If I wanted you to understand it all, I would have explained it better."
"Actually I never make a mistake, because it takes a huge effort for me to make a mistake."
"I don't believe in God. In Spain all 22 players cross themselves, if it works the game is always going to be a tie."

    On football and his philosophy

"Playing football is very simple, but playing simple football is the hardest thing there is."
"Italians can't win the game against you, but you can lose the game against the Italians."
"Quality without results is pointless. Results without quality is boring."
"It's better to go down with your own vision than with someone else's."
"In my teams, the goalie is the first attacker, and the striker the first defender."
"There is only one ball, so you need to have it."
"Why couldn't you beat a richer club? I've never seen a bag of money score a goal."

You put it so eloquently 'Ammy not a lot left to say about a true football legend except I can't think of one other player that has had a move named after him. May the "Cruyff turn" live on forever.

Is he 'avin' a dig at our Mel!  Whistle

The first true football legend that I can remember actually seeing in his prime (only on TV, of course).  I would say there is only one still alive ranked higher than him... and no, I don't mean Maradona!!

If having names on backs of shirts was fashionable back when I was approaching my teens, I can't think of anyone else's name I would have had on mine... Maybe Toddo, but that includes bias, of course!

I lost count of how many times I fell over trying to emulate "That turn"... and I soon learned not to try it on the hard tarmac playground at school!   Embarassed

I hate using the word legend in modern parlance, as it's lost it's flavour nowadays... but there truly is no better word to use in this instance.

    RIP, Master.

The sad thing is the Rams were a cheating ref and a missed penalty away from seeing some of our all time greats up against him and that brilliant Ajax team in a European Cup Final.

Maradona also had a turn named after him. Not saying who was better though. Think I fell over more times trying to do the Maradona turn though to be honest.

Pele, Maradona, Messi and Cruyff...the four greatest players I have ever seen.

So far, only one of them has gone on to become a truly great innovator and manager after he retired.

    Rest in peace, Johan.
