    Rule Changes

Post by SawleyRam on Fri 03 Jun 2016, 7:45 am

There are 95, yes 95 rule changes for next season, most of a technical nature but the stand outs for me that could cause confusion for fans, players and referees alike are these:

A free-kick or penalty can only be awarded while the ball is in play.

So a defender can chin an attacker in the penalty area if the ball is deemed out of play, get sent off and still no penalty despite the offence being committed in the area?

Denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity in the penalty area is no longer a straight red card - unless the offence is holding, pulling or pushing; there's no attempt to play or no possibility of making a challenge; or it's an offence which is punishable by a red card, no matter where on the pitch it happens - violent conduct, for example.

So a defender being level with an attacker as last man and tripping him could be deemed in the referee's eyes as not a red card offence now?

Violent conduct is punishable by a red card even if no contact is made.

So threatening to punch an opponent on the nose is now a red card offence?

    And finally:

    Law 13 - free-kicks

When fouls are committed off the pitch when the ball is in play, the match is restarted with a free-kick on the touchline nearest where the incident occurred. A direct free-kick will be awarded for direct free-kick offences - and a penalty could be awarded if it happens parallel to the penalty area.

So, Chin an opponent in the penalty area whilst the ball is out of play - no penalty. Chin an opponent parallel to the penalty area whist you are both out of play and it's a penalty!

Going to be some fun next season!

A free-kick or penalty can only be awarded while the ball is in play.

That is not new. That Law has been there a while already.

As for the off the field of play fouls, I could just about understand it if it was restricted to over the goal line and within the side lines of the 18 yard box..........

Emergency loans are also banned for next season, so clubs will have to run with larger squads.

Perhaps the start of the most dramatic game changer has been missed out.....

Apart from these changes, FIFA is also working with 15 countries including England, Italy and Holland to go on a live trial of the video technology.

Workshop is expected to be setup in Amsterdam next week and pending on the results, we will know exactly when the video technology will be introduced in the game of Football.
