Where will the Rams fnish this season?

Post by RRC on Sun 24 Jul 2016, 9:22 am

Will we finally go up this season or will it be another near miss?

The betting public don't fancy us that much for promotion - we're behind
Newcastle, Norwich, Aston Villa and Brighton - but ahead of Wednesday,
    Wolves, QPR, Ipswich and Cardiff.

What's your take on this year's championship, the contenders and the no-hopers?

Please cast your vote on Derby's chances in our poll form at the top of the thread.

I've gone for a win in the play offs.

I don't think we'll make the top two but I do think we'll make the play offs and I just can't bring myself to predict another loss.

Of course, any transfer deals made before the end of August could change everything.

Just as an aside, I don't think that Newcastle are the dead certs that everybody else thinks, because I don't think that Benitez will stay if a big club comes calling, and I think that his leaving could turn his squad into a collection of expensive, misfiring misfits.

That is a concern - I fully agree with Loughie.

I reckon that the top six will be -

    Norwich
    Brighton
    Shef Wed
    Derby
    Newcastle
    Bristol C

We'll go up via the play offs.

IMO we have nearly done it 3 seasons on the trot.

The squad is promotion material. The Managers weren't.

That is the difference this season.

We might see Ince perform properly week in and week out as Pearson won't play him on the right wing but in a variation on "the number 10" role.

I expect to see a RB, CH and a striker coming in and a couple to go to balance the books.

We will know more when we see what ins and outs there have been come the end of August when the window shuts. However, as the poll is now, I will have to go for promotion. Purely down to Pearson.

I'm predicting big things from Sheff Wed this season. As for our chances, a couple of players have left and no-one has come in yet. We still need another rightback, centre forward and will probably need a centreback if Bucko leaves imo. So not too hopeful as things currently stand.

It would be too easy for us to get a proper manager and just go up.
    Not the Derby Way.
I'm a fan of the manager but I think we are still short ( by about three players) of the steel and quality to go up.
And to be honest I don't know where we can go to find or buy those three players.
So as it stands no promotion for me.

I don't think we have the squad to go up. Its unbalanced, has no genuine width, and no quality replacements at centre back or centre forward. In fact, we are missing a top class centre back to partner Shackell.

I'm tempted to say 14th again, just because eventually I'll be right, but realistically, without any additions, I expect top ten but not top six.

If we strengthen in key areas before deadline date then I'll reassess.

The more (if any) that come in, the more disruption we'll suffer.
This group are getting stronger by the season.  More familiar by the month... and less panicky by the game.
Stick together, and be gelling well, whilst the rest are left well jel!!

I don't think our defenders are any where near good enough, especially Keogh who makes too many mistakes and Shackell who cannot pass worth a damn. Forsyth is about the pick of the bunch but unless Pearson has a magic wand we'll be crap at the back.

Whilst we have a good attacking midfield we still have a cart hoss up front.

But what really really worries me more than anything, no matter how talented we are, is the fact we are a team of bottlers, we lose it when anything is at stake and then like with Hull last year when it is totally lost we relax and play. Go a goal down our heads drop, and we fans hardly help because we can be just as bad, leave the moaning on here and in the pub.

I hope Pearson whips the mardy, lackadaisical namby pamby slackers into shape. If he does we might scrape into the play offs and then it is a coin toss.

I agree with the current summary of the squad, also the full-backs are vulnerable. As it is I would say between 5th and 10th, I expect though Pearson will get some out and 2 or 3 in where we need and a more balanced squad. Not sure though even he can get the 90 points we may need, so I think my money would be 3rd or 4th.

It was such a stupid decision to appoint a rookie last year.

I am counting on him to put a bit of steel into them but it is a worry we don't have a real leader amongst the players. I was hoping maybe Johnson was going to be the man early last year but not to be. We need a proper hard nasty bastard and we haven't got one.

Tricky to call it at the moment. We still have the same squad that failed to win promotion last season, and it will fail again unless changes are made.

I'll reserve my prediction until we've played a few games under the new regime.

Totally agree thought Johnson was going to be that warrior like leader that we need on the field and he actually started out like he was.
But then he suddenly looked Fat and immobile.

I think they need new blood we are still lacking skill and steel.
But there is a new man in charge and Blackman said last night that they certainly know who the boss is.
So whilst I think we need new players I wouldn't underestimate a strong managers ability to motivate a ordinary team above its true level.

To be fair, lacking a leader isn't a Rams problem, it's a football problem. With the advent of non contact football, the hard man leader is becoming obsolete, and as we know, these multi millionaire players just won't accept criticism from anybody these days so the ranting, shouting captain, telling it like it is is also becoming a thing of the past.

Look two seasons ago when Keogh was constantly having a go at Christie. The fans slaughtered him for it and Christie just went into his shell and lost all confidence. Now I know that there needs to be more subtlety than Keogh showwed, but the principle is the for all to see.
