Conceding late goals - facts and opinions

Post by RRC on Wed 08 Mar 2017, 2:44 pm

Shock! Horror! Derby DON'T concede lots of goals late in matches!

We're average for the Championship with 10 goals conceded after the 75th minute.

Seven teams have conceded fewer (6 to 9 goals) -
--- Newcastle, Brighton, Huddersfield, Fulham, Barnsley, Ipswich and QPR.
Four other teams have also conceded 10 -
--- Reading, Sheffield Weds, Villa and Wigan
Twelve have conceded more - Rotherham are top (or bottom) with 25, but six teams have
    have conceded 15 or more.

Of course we could (and should) do better by not sitting back and inviting all-out attacks.

Imho there must be a reason why we play like this - lack of fitness or SM's instructions?

The substitutions against Preston were daft but they were not unusual for SM. He rarely
brings on a defender - a sensible option if we're going to sit back. The only defender on the
bench last night was Anya - it's not unusual for us to have only one defender on the bench.

We've been pretty average all round, which is why we're 10th, so I doubt we're near the top or bottom in anything.

I've watched quite a few championship games on tv where there were late goals this season - it's not that unusual.

The only way to find out is to check every match report for games where we conceded - I'll leave that to you.

It's good to know we're not the worst when it comes to conceding late goals, but it's frustrating to see us continue to go into panic mode late in games and invite the opposition to attack us almost unchallenged.

The fact that opposing sides don't always make the most of our generosity usually owes more to their poor finishing than our skillful defending.
