    Rowett on RD

Post by Loughborough Ram on Mon 24 Apr 2017, 8:24 pm

Gary Rowett was on the Radio Derby talk in tonight. He was quite candid about many issues especially the kind of players and system that he wants to play. From what he said, Will Hughes will have to adapt to be an automatic starter, Chris Martin will be no more than an option next season, and I'll be stunned and amazed if Tom Ince is still here.

He said that he doesn't have to sell to buy, but he wants to trim the squad. He said that Mel Morris has given him carte blanche to make whatever changes he sees fit to the playing side of things. I nearly broke out into a round of applause when he said that pre season would be much harder than many of the players were used to and it sounded to me like he isn't happy with the accademy and he implied that he has already implimented some new practices within that.

All in all he talked a good game as he always does, but lets hope that he can transfer that into actions. I get the feeling that he won't fail through a lack of effort.

He didn't say that about Martin. He did say that they have spoken and that Martin will be here next year and that he gives us so many different options ...as he brings others in, holds it up, strong in the air, scores goals and is different to what he currently has to work with.
He didn't say he would be just an option...but that he gave us more options.

He said that he wants pace up front and that isn't Chris Martin, and he also suggested that Martin might be able to play as a number 10, which we have seen on numerous occasions, he can't. So reading between the lines, to me, it doesn't sound like he is an automatic first choice, and certainly not going to have a team built around him.

Thanks for your interpretations Val and Lough.

    According to Derby Telegraph;

"I think Nuge (David Nugent) can play as a No.10 of sorts, Matej Vydra can certainly play as a '10' and I'll be honest I have looked before and thought somebody like Chris Martin can play as a '10' because he is a good link striker, he links together the runners."

How many No 10's do we need???????

To be fair Rowett was bemoaning that very thing. He said something like, when we arrived we counted "5 number 10's", when we can only play 1 at a time.

He also said he wants different options to be able to play more than one way. Chris Martin gives different to what we have had this season. My guess is that Bent and Blackman will go and Martin will return and we will sign a pacy striker as well giving us 4 good strikers, all with different qualities for different circumstances.

Isn't that what I said Val, Chris Martin will be no more than an option next season?

A couple of days ago I offered the idea that having Nugent and Martin, 2 vastly different players, would give us the chance to change personnel dependent on the opponents. Where a target man is the right choice it's Martin. Where you need a pacy man it's Nugent.

Is that what Rowett was hinting at in regard to these two?

It's difficult to answer that mad. Having tried to interpret what he said I got the feeling that he is going to be bringing in a forward that has pace and power and the others will be chosen depending whether he has one up front, two up front or one playing off the front man.

I still suspect we'll sell Martin if a bid comes in.

I think the bottom line is that not one player is safe and guaranteed to play. They've all got to up their game or leave. Hurrah!!

I doubt we'll sell Martin. Who would that leave? Two blokes in their mid-thirties. What would a striker sure to score as many goals in this division as Martin will cost us? Less than we get for selling him? No. He'll be here in August, and he'll make himself a starter by scoring goals.
