Bent and Baird to get contracts extended

Post by thatguyfromderby on Wed 26 Apr 2017, 1:02 pm

    Highly disappointed about Bent.

    http://www.derbytelegraph.co.uk/latest-on-the-contract-situation-of-derby-county-pair-darren-bent-and-chris-baird/story-30295173-detail/story.html

The futures of Derby County pair Darren Bent and Chris Baird have been resolved.

Both are to have their contracts extended.

The contract of both players is due to expire this summer but there is a clause option in each to extend the deal by a further 12 months to the summer of 2018.

    The options will be activated.

Bent, who is 33, has scored 13 goals in 41 appearances this season.

as long as he is an option off the bench and is on reduced money then not a bad option - if he is main man then wrong (bent)

Baird - as long as he looks after himself great squad player

Hope neither are first choice 11

I suppose neither really has any re-sale value but lots of experience. Honestly, i can't remember approaching the end of a season so unsure about what the team will look like the next. Maybe the Jewell era!?!

I expected Baird to get a year but that Bent would be released.

Looking further at news I read the following from the Telegraph over a comment made by
Gary Rowett wrote:get one or two in before the players come back for pre-season, and then maybe two or three come through the door after that

Nowhere near as many incoming as many had hoped but bang on my thoughts of "5 or 6 incoming as more is not conducive to integration" mantra.

Going on MM's wish to have a smaller squad, as I said on the other thread, it would be achieved with 5 or 6 in and 12 to 15 out. The out list will be very interesting.

Oh. Well that's a let down Mr Rowett. Bent must be on astronomical wages. Shit!

Doesn't it sound like both players were entitled to the extra year based on appearences, so therefore if thats the case maybe it is the players who are driving this with the Rams having little choice than to comply.

According to Steve Nicholson, you are correct Loughie.

Perfect opportunity to reduce a bloated squad gone as others will be hard to move on, but not a lot can be done if clauses have been triggered, could be useful if the youngsters learn off them behind the scenes

The thought of watching Benty strolling about for yet another season doesn't inspire we I have to say. Look at the difference a hardworking, up yer arse centre forward made against Fulham. Still, sounds like the decision was out of our hands, who knows. Personally he would have been first out of the door for me, especially if on ludicrous wages as we are led to believe. Still, a man's got to be kept in trainers hasn't he!

I can see that on an individual basis this makes some sense. Bent is here, he's scored a few goals this season and he's not a useless player to have on the bench for another season. Moreover at his age he's not going to get disgruntled by lack of first team action or believe that some other club might give it to him. But overall I have to agree with Ram78. If the goal is to trim some fat, letting go of an out-of-contract Bent seems an obvious step in that direction.

Sure hope someone will take Blackman, Butterfield, Weimann, et al off our hands. This squad's not getting any smaller unless we can talk some clubs into signing players who have proved here that they're a waste of space.

Can't say I'm surprised by the Bent situation, and I hope GR knew about it too. If I was manager the first thing I'd have done would be to get fully briefed on the contract situation of all the players. Unless MM is prepared to pay contracts up in full ahead of their expiry dates he's stuck with them.

I just hope it doesn't mean we've got to have Bent as first choice striker next season.

It seems that there was a clause in the contracts that allowed the players to exercise a 1 year extension if they played a certain number of games and/or scored, in bent's case, a certain umber of goals.

GR had no choice in the matter apparently.

so our magic mr rush is at fault then for agreeing to these contract clauses - (and other players being shit enough to give Bent enough opportunity to trigger the clause)

Whoever writes our contracts should be first out of the door. We give players stupid clauses which mean they stay when not required...and also stupid contracts that allow other clubs to keep our players. How come other clubs use the recall clause (Ibe) which we seem to omit???!!!

Wouldn't be much for either though and their wages may prove to be a stumbling block. If Derby really wanted rid then make the transfer package as appealing to other clubs as possible.

Doubtful as it is the players who have exercised THEIR right to en extra year according to clauses in their contracts. If I was in GR's shoes and had had a free hand I would have given Baird a year as he is an option right across the back 4. I would have let Bent go.

    GR didn't have that luxury.
