    Stuart Webb's book

Post by bramhallram on Thu 04 May 2017, 6:15 pm

Just finished reading Stuart Webb's book called 'Clough, Maxwell and Me'. Very interesting behind the scenes stuff about all the characters he had to deal with and how close we came to extinction.

    Well worth a read.

Jeez, just for a second there I thought the topic read "Stuart Webb's back" ....

To be fair to the man, I believe that he was the one running around corridors before, during and possibly after our defeat to Plymouth on that sad 1984 spring evening, and had as much right as anyone to claim that he saved the Rams.

Perhaps he should have been in goal instead of Steve Cherry for that corner.....

Word was that Webb was very important in keeping us afloat at the time.

Not read the book, yet, but I have always been aware as to how VERY close to extinction we were.

Didn't he have something to do with czech players and dodgy passports?

Not dodgy passports as such, but he got involved with two Czech players who tried to defect. It was all driven by Robert Maxwell who thought he could get two Czech internationals to sign for Derby for nothing, ignoring the fact that they were contracted to a Czech team at the time. Webb had the task of clearing up the mess.

    Passports and Derby County ...

Lubos Kubic and Ivo Knoflicek 1998 - Maxwell, enough said.

Estaban Fuertes 1999 £2.3M - refused entry back into the UK due to passport issues,

Yakubi Ayegbeni 2002 -couldn't get a work permit and sign for us... he then found love and got married to a UK citizen which I believe then allowed him to sign for Portsmouth. I believe that he married again in 2008.
