    British Lions - Football Version

Post by Barnstaple Ram on Wed 17 May 2017, 1:37 pm

Next mouth sees the British Lions tour New Zealand in Rugby

The various national unions don't have a problem with this and neither does the game in general

In football both UEFA and FIFA would not allow this to happen

Do you think it would be a good idea if once every 4 years (in non world cup or Euros years) for a squad of British players to tour say South Africa or Africa and play a number of games

As its only the English that keep on about being British the others couldn't give a toss then no.

It's not FIFA and UEFA saying no. It is the FA, SFA, FAW and the IFA.

The reason being that most people worldwide don't understand how/why one country, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, should have 4 teams in international football when everybody else has just the one.

The error they make is that they forget that FIFA is (supposedly) an independent, nonpolitical organisation and that it is individual football associations that are members, not countries. The 4 FA's get invited to enter a team each in the World and Euro Cups. That is why we have the 4. With the exception of the 2012 Olympic Games there hasn't been a GB team because the 4 home FA's are fearful that the rest of the world will gang up and reduce us to just the one (Mrs Wembley) at World Cups and maybe even the Euro's.

The Africans and Asians have been pushing this one GB team for decades as they believe that it would lead to them getting more teams into the Final stages and possibly more clout at the Committee table.

will hopefully never happen - England vs Scotland is the oldest international fixture in world football - I know FIFA (and the FA) are willing to throw history to the wind for a brown envelope stuffed with cash but some things should remain sacrosanct - and this is coming from a person who really really really does not give a flying eff about international football

Pointless at the moment. There'd only be Welshmen on the team. We should just send Wales overseas with a hand-written apology from the rest of us for being so shite.

Is this the Wales team that look like they are going to fail to qualify for the world cup AGAIN, making their only success for fifty years one single qualification to a tournament in which they rode their luck all the way to the semis, being beaten on the way by a team that are supposedly worse than them.

Not in favour of a team gb as I expect most English Scottish are not. We have our own identity.
As for Wales we back struggling to qualify this tournament due to a lack of striker we rely on one man
