Mason Bennet came out of that 2nd half looking like a brand new player. Drive, determination, power, pace, and a tidy finish. Still only 21 despite being around the club for a long ol' time.

Martin showed his value to the team effort in the second half and a very able effort from the 21st birthday boy Mason Bennett.

Thought Butterfield showed why we have been had over by the terriers his passing is so toe curlingly poor
Blackman ok in little cameos but overall looks lost, good to see Hanson performing again too

Second half was so much better once the passes were coming through from midfield

Nice goal for MB too showed his character and desire to get in the team, gets respect from me.

Based on the 2 pre season games so far (not much to base an opinion on but I'll have a go anyway) my preferred starting "front 4" is Weimann, Nugent, Martin, Bennett.

We will know more come the midweek, simultaneous, games. IMO he will either play a 1st and a 2nd team or he will play 1st team back 7 with the 2nd team front 4 and vice versa.

On Saturday in Kaiserslautern, apart from injured players, I expect the starting XI to be GRs 1st team.

Admittedly low level opposition, but I thought that Elsnik was the stand-out performer.

Knitted the defence and attack together, calm, strong and assured on the ball, overall just what we've been missing.

I know Tom's coming, but Elsnik looked the part. The problem will be fitting him in a midfield with TH,GT,BJ abd CB.

Bennett was better than Russell and Blackman, who still looks tactically inept even at this level.

Davies was exactly what I hoped for and expected.

I'd go along with that front four or 3-1.

I'd hope the midfield pair to be Huddlestone and Johnson,
assuming Thorne will rarely be available - imho Bryson is
sadly too lightweight for the defensive side of the role.

Some good peformances but also some mediocre ones even
    allowing for it being pre-season.

Am I the only one who thinks that Baird is more convincing
than Wisdom, especially when passing and getting forward?
The narrow 4-2-3-1 system needs a more effective attacking
contribution from the full backs than 4-4-2.

Personally I'd go with Bryson alongside Huddlestone as things stand. I just think that he gives you energy and cleverer options going forward. He is the best player at the club for timing forward runs, which we need now that Martin is back up front.

    It's a proper conundrum, isn't it?

BR, Chapel Ram (remember him from the DET days?) and myself were having this very discussion on the train post match. It all really depends on formation as to which of the squad gets into my starting XI.

On the basis that GR's preferred formation is 4231, the back 5 are Carson, Fozzy, Davies and interchangeable Wisdom and Baird for the CH and RB spots.

Then the problems begin. Huddlestone starts, but who with? Johnson? (we have to assume any fit GT games are a bonus, otherwise those 2 are shoe-ins).

On that basis, how do we fit Bryson in? I don't think we can. Front four of Martin, with Nugent behind centrally. Your wider two are from Bennett, Weimann, Anya and, at a push, Russell. We haven't even mentioned Vydra.

I desprately want to get Brys in the team as his runs beyond Martin will be vital in a team (squad) with no genuine width.

A 442 diamond with Hudds at the base, Brys at the apex, and Johnson plus one from Elsnik, Weimann Bennett or Anya. I'd be tempted to choose Elsnik based on his performance yesterday. There would also be question marks over how effective a Martin/Nugent front two would operate, but both are intelligent players and I think they could make it work. Vydra/Russell/ Bennett/possibly even Weimann as the replacement for the front two.

The problem with my first XI in that set up would be a lack of pace.

Not an easy job this management malarky, is it?

I get the feeling the way recent signings have gone that the defence will be asked to defend protected by 1/2 midfield holding players leaving 2 creative mids and 2 strikers to concentrate on their job instead of racing back to defend. When needed one of the midfield holding players can then play further forward still leaving the defence looking solid.

The 4 most solid DMs we have are BJ, Tom, Hanson and GT when fit. Pick any 2 of those and you have the situation where any 1 of them is good enough to go forward knowing full well the other will stay back and do the defensive duties.

Bryson, and more so Butterfield, look like being benchwarmers being brought on to add attacking [prowess when things aren't going to well. They will benefit if GR decides to have the 2 DMs split in one basically defensively minded and the other more of an attacking energetic player.

I see the bench being a keeper, 2 defenders, 2 MFs and 2 front players.

Mitchell, Keogh, Olsson/Lowe, Bryson, Butterfield, Vydra/Bent, Russell/Anya maybe?

I like the look of Elsnik...difficult to tell properly from tv but he looks strong and efficient with the ball.
I actually thought Blackman looked strong and powerful he made the best chance in the first half when we were ordinary.
Russell was never in it although to be fair I saw little pattern to our play in that first half.
