Pick the team and formation to play Sunderland

Post by RRC on Wed 02 Aug 2017, 7:41 am

It's starting to look like 4-3-3 again but should it be?

We have three new signings who look nailed on to start but what of the other eight?

Will there be any less familiar faces among them, or will it be same old, same old?

Do you think we'll get away with 12 on the pitch?

Brilliant. We play 12..we may win the league. Take out Butterfield and we have a decent 11

It's an away fixture. We may see 3-3 ahead of the 1-4 at home but I think we could well see 2-3-1 away from home. I will pick accordingly.

    Carson
    Wisdom Keogh Davies Forsyth

That is the 1-4 be it home or away.

    At Sunderland...........

Hudds and BJ as the 2

JR(should be Mason IMO) Nugent Weimann
    Martin

if he goes 3-3 then it is:
    BJ Hudds Butters(should be Bryson)
    JR(should be Mason) Martin Weimann

Whatever, I will be paying €3.99 to get a video feed direct from Ziggo Sport. COYR!!!

Oh David Nugent, Oh David Nugent, we found him in Preston, we found him in Preston, we found him in Preston at the side of the road in a Volkswagen beetle............

    I would select:

    Carson
    Wisdom Davies Pearce
    Anya-------------------------Forsyth
    Huddlestone Johnson
    Bryson
    Vydra Nugent

I think that GR will select

    Carson
    Wisdom Keogh Davies Forsyth
    Huddlestone
    Butterfield Johnson
    Russell---------------Weimann
    Martin

I agree largely with both of your teams Corny but I would make a slight alteration to your 3 at the back team.

    I would go with

    Carson

    Wisdom. Keogh. Davies
    Huddlestone
    Anya. Bryson. Forsyth
    Nugent. Vydra
    Martin

I agree with your other point regarding the team that Rowett will pick

with all these different systems evolving I would like to see something along the lines of

    Carson
    Wisdom Keogh Davies
    Hudds BJ
    Bennett Bryson Weimann
    Coldplay Nuge

I'd be tempted to pick Corny's back 3 if we went 3 at the back.

Pearce does not inspire me with confidence though, so I understand why some go for RK.

What about Wisdom-Davies-Baird as a back 3, with Baird on the left? 3 defenders, simply asked to defend.

BJ and Hudds sat in front, with Anya and Fozzy wide.

    Nuge and Vydra behind Coldplay.

It asks an awful lot of the wing backs, because again there is no natural attacking width otherwise.

I personally don't think we have the ability to go 3 at the back with the current squad - but neither do I think that we have two decent centre backs if Baird plays as/or is considered as a full back. He should be fighting Wisdom for the right back slot, but obviously he won't be starting.

    I'd actually go 4231.

    Wisdom Baird Davies Forsyth
    Huddleston BJ
    Bennett Nugent Anya
    Martin.

JR hasn't done enough to oust Mason.

I still don't feel comfortable not getting Bryson in the team, and wouldn't mind if he replaced Mason tbh, although it makes us lopsided. We need width in front of Tom to get the best out of his passing ability, so Craig would have to wait..

I think Corners has probably nailed GR's starting XI though.

I think it will be some kind of 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1
    I would go with
    Carson
    Wisdom, Keogh, Davies, forsyth
    Huddlestone, Bryson
    Vydra, Nugent, Weimann
    Chrissy Martin

I suspect Rowett will have a place in the starting 11 for Johnson, Butterfield and Russell though.

He has his limitations but was one of our most consistent performers in the second half of the season - in fact for a little longer than that IMHO.

Not just defensively, too - you will recall his inch perfect pass for ince's super goal V the Trees - that wasn't his only excellent delivery.

We could do a lot worse.
