Bolton-1 2 Derby reports and comments

Post by RRC on Sat 19 Aug 2017, 4:56 pm

Derby made no changes to the starting eleven that beat Preston on Tuesday but
new signing Tom Lawrence replaced Bennett on the bench. Bolton lined up in their
    defensive 5-3-2 formation.

The opening minutes were even until a throw-in for Derby allowed Vydra to create
an opening with superb control, a good turn to lose his marker, and fine cross for
Nugent, who opened his account for the season on 8 minutes. From that point
Bolton had plenty of possession and occasional counter-attacks but Derby’s use
of two banks of four in defensive situations was more than a match for Bolton’s
5-3-2 and long balls to Madine. The Rams moved better, with everyone wanting
the ball, and their passing was positive and quick.

Nugent doubled the score with another tap-in on 21 minutes after a good move by
Wisdom and Russell. A Nugent pass put Vydra clean through but he missed a
sitter and he also put another shot over the bar from a Wisdom cross. As the half
ended, the Rams’ play became slower and sloppy at times but Bolton were too poor
to take advantage. Out of nowhere Wisdom made a great solo run, beating four
Bolton players, but he shot wide.
    HT Bolton 0-2 Derby

Early in the half Russell was in a good position to score but, instead of shooting, he
took a touch and lost the ball. Derby’s play became slow and ragged, which allowed
Bolton to make better attacking chances. Clever play by Weimann and Vydra created
a good opening for Russell, who was scythed down by the last defender. The referee,
who had been lenient throughout, only gave the defender a yellow card, which may
have saved Wisdom from a second yellow and a sending off later in the half.

Vydra, who was involved in all of Derby’s best moves, was replaced by Lawrence on
67 minutes. Lawrence appeared confident and fitted well into Vydra’s role. Martin
came on for Nugent with eleven minutes to go and Butterfield replaced Weimann
for the last four minutes. Russell kept spoiling his improved performance with poor
control, causing the breakdown of attacks. The Rams' clean sheet didn’t survive
through injury time as Madine scored a consolation goal from a long ball pass.
    FT Bolton 1–2 Derby

Derby’s first half was dominant but it’s hard to evaluate it against a side as weak as
Bolton. Their second win moved the Rams to just outside the playoff spots.

Good to see 2 wins on the bounce, should have been easier if Vydra had his shooting boots on.

This is a poor Bolton side and will be in the relegation battle

Still a win is a win, on to the Mariners COYR

Shame about their goal although I think there was a foul on Davies.
Carson didn't have a decent shot to save otherwise.
Maybe should have had about five but we were competent and organized without being flash.
Obvious difference from the first two games is the movement and mobility upfront.
Only a small glimpse but I think the new Tom has the potential to be a far bigger hero than the Tom he replaced.

Brilliant first half where we didn't give them a shout. Could have been 4 or 5 up by half time.

Took our foot off the gas in the 2nd half but they didn't look dangerous until they went fishcake or bust the last 10 minutes. Their goal should not have stood as there was a blatant foul on Davies.

Bolton are in for a long hard season on this performance.

I expect 6 to 8 changes for the League cup tie at Grimsby.

Regardless of the opposition, 3 points is 3 points...i take that every day of the week. Be good to win at Grimsby, for momentum and confidence, but I would make many changes as beating Sheffield United next Saturday is paramount!

Shame we took our foot off the gas - we should have motored on and made the game safe - another goal or two would have done it, then it wouldn't matter if they went all out or bust near the end, and our goal difference would be healthier as a result. Its the derby way, but 3 points is 3 points. It is looking better than I could have hoped. COYR
