    A Gary Rowett Team?

Post by SawleyRam on Fri 01 Sep 2017, 2:37 pm

Just had a look at who would now be considered for the first team hoping that George Thorne would be fit and I find a different look and feel about it.

Others will have different views but for me this is a typical GR team

    Goal - Carson

Defence - Wisdom, Keogh & Davies

Mid - Johnson, Huddleston, Thorne & Kieftenbeld

    'In the Hole' - Lawrence

    Strikers - Winnall & Nugent

Bench would be difficult but here goes:

Mitchell, Martin, Russell, Bennett, Forsyth Pearce & Vydra

One thing for certain with that midfield there is not a lot of flair but we will not be bullied into submission as we have in the past.

With a couple of exceptions I still see our weakness as lack of pace.

As GR is a big fan of Dortmund and Klopp, it could be 4-3-3 again,
but with more grit in midfield and pace up front, perhaps -

    Carson
    Wisdom Keogh Davies Olsson
    Kieftenbled Huddlestone Johnson/Thorne
    Vydra Winnall Lawrence

I can't see him playing three at the back or any strange formations.

I doubt we'll really see what he really wants to do until after summer
2019 when most of the current squad will be out of contract.

I wouldn't be surprised to see something akin to a 4-2-3-1.

    Carson
    Wisdom - Keogh - Davies - Fozzy
Keiftenbeld (defensive only) - Huddlestone (linking the midfield to attack)
Vydra - Winnall/Nugent (playing in the hole) - Vydra
    Winnall/Nugent/Martin

At the very least, it's starting to feel like round pegs in round holes. This is the first manager to bring in a proper DM to cover Thorne. It's breath of fresh air.

Well Weimann managed it last time Johnny Russell was playing.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a fairly standard 442 appear.

    Carson
    Wisdom, Keogh, Davis, Forsyth
    Anya(or Russell), Keiftenbeld, Huddlestone, Larwence
    Winall, Nugent(or Vydra)

I see a couple of posters have left GT out completely. Is this because.......

    a) you forgot about him
    b) you aren't considering him until he is fit
    c) you think he is beyond repair

I await, full of intrigue, the answers.

My post was intended as an indication of what Rowett's September to December side might be. Given that Thorne isn't yet match fit, wasn't signed by Rowett and there are two midfielders who were currently available, I'd say that Thorne is not likely to feature too much at first.

Then there's the probability that he'll break down again. I hope that Thorne returns to drive us into the Premier League, but I'm not holding my breath.

Also purely for fitness. I suspect Keiftenbeld will help allow GT time to recover properly without being rushed back in.. as always happens.

I unfortunately cannot see GT ever being able to put a sustained run of games together at this level and even if he does I wonder if we will ever see the same effective player we all fell in love with.

Clear and concise answers. Thanks. If he breaks down again with something serious, it may well signal the end of his career. That would be a waste of a great talent. Everything crossed for GT to stay healthy.
