Experienced (but only 30) central midfielder at Premiership level who is described as having a 'terrific engine, high work rate, and high fitness levels'.

Surely this is the type of player we are missing is it not?

    Would offer versatility, too.

    Yes, please.

Smacks a little of desperation in my opinion, not sure he's that much different to what we already have, so personally I'd sooner wait and get somebody we want in January or next summer rather than filling a problem position with an exoensive option just because he's all that's available.

Lets not forget, we signed Johnson and Butterfield in desperation and almost certainly regret it to this day.

A good and experienced midfielder but, as I alluded to in another thread, lack of pace in an already paceless midfield, how is that going to work?

There should be no way that Huddleston, Johnson and Ledley would/should play together, an opposition midfield of young spirited pacy runners would negate all that experience as quickly as a hot knife through butter!

If Ledley does come here I hope to be proved wrong, but I doubt it.

We've signed a decent, out of contract player on a short term loan. Not exactly mortgaging the ground, is it ?

    What's the problem ?

If it works we maybe gain a leader on the pitch.

Good signing for me. He fills a void in the squad. I also don't think he's as slow as some make out, certainly not express, but still a hare compared to the tortoise that is Tom Huddlestone. Ledley is (hopefully still) a mobile player who covers a lot of ground. Something which we also lack.

To me, he's exactly the sort of general midfielder we lack, in that he can tackle, pass, run and put his foot in when required. Maybe a pairing with Huddlestone would lack a little pace, in partnership with Thorne (IF...) he should shine.

The big question mark is how long will he take to achieve full match fitness?

Not being funny Cornwall Ram, but Thorne is as slow as Huddlestone.
They are both really good footballers, but neither is blessed in the speed category.
I'm sure this signing shows the style Rowett will be asking us to play.
I cant believe Mel has allowed him to completely change a way of playing that got us to the play off final, and ditch most of the players.
The football was winning and entertaining..now we have neither..so for all you, " everything must change", and "we keep failing"....well you're getting what you wished for...

I refer to the title of the previous thread in response to this post!
I don't see it doing any harm or breaking the bank and I for 1 am hoping Thorne's misery and us fans too is at an end and he can come back as the player we all know he can be! In which case hopefully Ledley will be mostly used as cover or even better a replacement for Huddlestone who as good a player and passer that he is, is neither mobile or gritty enough for this league and I'm afraid far to casual, getting caught out or putting colleagues in trouble far to often!
I too would've been happier to see a more mobile and quicker player than Ledley brought in but where do you get 1 of them from at this point in the season? Tell me and I'll go and pick him up. My only worry is especially working to GR's scale of being match fit (e.g.Forsythe & Thorne) we're taking it easy with them, not played for a long while etc, Ledley won't be deemed match fit before January!

I don't think that Thorne is particularly slow. He's certainly no speed merchant, but when he was fully fit he was able to close down midfield runners quickly enough. I can also remember a few late runs into the box. Huddlestone, however, is Chris Martin slow and makes Jake Buxton look like a ballerina when turning.

To me, Ledley and Thorne have the best mix of ability, aggression and movement - perhaps lacking in overall speed, but we can't have everything and none of the other options are any quicker. I'd like to see Hanson given a run of games to prove himself in that position, but at present he's never been able to hang on to a shirt. Huddlestone is just too immobile and we will struggle when he plays. Bradley Johnson isn't a very good footballer and his energy levels have noticeably dropped, so he's also not ideal.

I always thought it was Thorne's ability to read the game that made him seem quicker. He knew where the play would be, so he wasn't busting a lung to get there. It gives me real hope for his recovery; that part of his game shouldn't be effected by his injury.

Exactly, the best midfield players don't need to run around at 100mph all game. They read the play, close down the angles and make what looks like a simple interception. Bryson was probably the exact opposite in that without possession he often ran around like a headless chicken trying to intercept but rarely getting there in time. His saving grace was/is his ability in the final third.

Let's see how quickly he gets in the team. It would be ironic a player not had a club and played since god knows how long is in the squad to play Cardiff. Won't surprise me with derby

He will work hard knowing there could be a chance to get in Wales squad in 2 big games that could get us to playoffs for Moscow

A decent short term signing - with the option of extending if it works out. Fitness will be his issue but he'll certainly put his foot in. If GR is allowed to make it happen, Ledley would also bring some credible leadership on the pitch.

I'd expect him to get 60 minutes or thereabouts v Brum.
