    Johnny Russell

Post by SawleyRam on Sun 24 Sep 2017, 12:35 am

Why was Russell not in the squad? asked the RD interviewer in Rowetts post match interview and the reply was "he was was fit and available for selection but was left out for other reasons" when asked to explain Gary said "for other reasons and lets leave it there"

Make of it what you wish.

I thought it odd how ledley who has not played for months takes to the bench and drops Russell.

I would have had Ledley in the team let alone the squad regardless of the Russell situation. The only way to get fit and sharp is to play matches, and he's only here til January. I'd give him an hour and then get fresh legs on, I hate this modern way of bringing in players and not playing them for a few weeks, like we did with Lawrence.

Lawrence did have pre season ledley didn't. Russell has been in squad and up to speed. Yes have on bench but instead of Russel to me was strange and bet Russell is missed off.

JR must be doing something very wrong if he has fallen behind Mason Bennett in the pecking order.

Why isn't George Thorne in there? He's played a couple of games for the U23's including a full 90 minutes. Get him on the pitch.

May / may not have a chest infection..... but if so why did GR choose not to properly explain HIS absence also?

Thorne had a virus during the week so was not selected for the bench

Based on overall performances this season Russell has been poor and so can't complain if others have been given a chance

Maybe the fact that Pearce and Bennett have had contract extensions..and Russell hasn't..i suspect that he will be offski long with Bent, Anya and Shackell..and probably, hate to say it but Martin as well..unless we change back to 4-3-3 and play him!

Love Coldplay to bits but his time has probably come. He doesn't fit into GR's style of play. Played the right way in a team suited to him he is a go(a)ldmine.

JR? His lack of end product may finally have come home to roost. What I don't understand is the comment from outsider of "I thought it odd how ledley who has not played for months takes to the bench and drops Russell." Replace the names wth the terms midfielder and striker/attacker and you see it was quite likely a tactical thing.

It would have been very easy for GR to have said 'viral infection' and 'tactical reasons' instead of trying to side step the issues and create a mystery.

Management is also about man management not just football and it's associated tactics, some players need a pat on the back and others an imaginary smack on the nose. Rowett's comments sound like the latter to me.
