    Holland v Sweden

The cloggies need to win by 7 goals to go through to the playoffs. They are actually going for it, hell for leather and that is not the Dutch way. There is passion, aggression and effort.

If only they had put as much into some of the previous qualification games they wouldn't be in this much trouble.

2-0 up at HT, could just as easily be 5-1.

I hope they play the same way 2nd half and in the future as the Dutch skills added to England/German type effort and they will be back in the top of world football.

The Dutch way will probably win though and in future they will go back to normal.

There is a great article in this months WSC about the decline of Dutch football, and indeed their "star" coaches. Seems they are being outclassed in European club competition too.

Such a shame - I enjoy their traditional skill allied with a certain swagger.

The Dutch share your view SR. The traditional Dutch School of Football is 1-4-3-3 and we all know that far too many teams know how to stifle that these days.

The reason for the Dutch clubs failing in Europe is money. They can't compete with the other nations when it comes to money. They can't afford to buy a team of experienced internationals. Bayern, Barca, Real, PSG, Manarsepoolchelspurs can. Another problem is agents. They are, they say, there for their clients but they only get the big money when their client changes clubs for a huge fee. That is why so may players change clubs every 1 or 2 years.

The success the Dutch had in the past in churning out a, seemingly, never ending pool of top players has also had a hand in their demise. In the past players understood that they were learning far more in Holland than they ever could elsewhere and stayed learning their trade in Holland until they were somewhere between 23 and 26. Over the years, players of promise, rather than learning their trade and becoming World Class before moving on, have been doing so earlier and earlier in their careers and most move aged between 18 and 20. Their new club has paid tens of millions for them and they are expected to play flawlessly week after week. The reality is that they are not yet the finished product and, with the odd exception, fail in their new environment because they have never played 1-4-2-3-1 or 1-4-4-2 or 1-3-5-2 or anything but 1-4-3-3. They play a dozen games at most and are put into the reserves and don't get the coaching they require as the clubs think that, at 40M or so, they should be be able to play anywhere in any system. They get moved on to yet another failure and their confidence is blown.......
