Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 Derby reports and comments

Post by RRC on Tue 13 Feb 2018, 9:53 pm

Derby made six changes to the team that started in the lifeless draw with Norwich
on Saturday, with Baird, Forsyth, Ledley Weimann, Johnson and Nugent replacing
Wisdom, Olsson, Thorne, Lawrence, Anya and Jerome -
          Carson
          Baird Keogh Davies Forsyth
          Huddlestone Ledley
          Weimann Vydra Johnson
          Nugent
subs - Roos Wisdom Pearce Anya Lawrence Palmer Jerome

Derby started with more energy than usual, won the first corner, and a good Baird
cross made a chance for Nugent, which he missed. Vydra was closely man-marked
by Pelupessy. Ledley was an effective, calming influence in midfield. Sheffield did
well in building quick attacks, they were soon looking the better side,  and Carson
had to save a free header. The Rams failed to mark properly, giving the home side
too much room, and João scored from a right wing cross on 18 minutes.

After taking the lead, the hosts defended in numbers, putting the onus on Derby to
find a way to goal. The Rams’ passing was inaccurate and negative, and their
movement was too slow, so that their few telling passes went begging. Baird provided
a fine cross for Weimann but his header was just wide. Defensively Derby were edgy
and  slack, and the hosts came close to taking advantage several times. The Rams
team looked ragged for most of the half. They had four shots, none on target.
    HT Sheffield Wednesday 1–0 Derby

João started a move which led to him scoring again 2 minutes after the re-start.
None of the Rams closed him down and Carson had no chance with the shot. Derby
might have had a penalty when Weimann broke rapidly into the home side’s box but
the referee would have none of it. As in the first half, none of the Rams gambled to
reach crosses, and Nugent missed another good chance with a header from a corner.
The home side’s counter attacks were more threatening than Derby’s.

The Rams had a better spell after ten minutes. Weimann, slipped in by Vydra, had a
golden chance saved by the keeper. The game became more open when the Rams
pushed forward, and both sides had more openings. Nugent had a shot saved and a
Huddlestone volley was just over the bar. Anya replaced Ledley on 74 minutes, and
Johnson moved back into midfield.  A fine move by Huddlestone, Weimann and
Nugent was wasted when Vydra miscued his shot. Anya did well in co-ordinating
forward moves but they petered out through poor control or weak shooting. Jerome
and Palmer replaced Nugent and Vydra on 82 minutes. A wonderful run by Palmer
was only foiled by a last ditch tackle. Derby’s last chance came when Weimann had
a chip tipped over the bar for a corner in extra time. Their 12-game unbeaten run
was ended by another below par performance.
    FT Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 Derby

Derby’s loss and Cardiff’s win mean that the Rams hang on to 3rd place on a better
goal difference (only 2 goals now), though Cardiff still have a game in hand. Is this
now the usual New Year slump and a repeat of our missing out on promotion?

This result has been coming.......for about 2 months.

We played exactly the same way we have done for most of this season. The only difference is that we didn't take our chances and the opposition took theirs.

As I have been saying for a while now, we are in a false position and at the end of the season, the league table will reflect the position that a side full of ageing professionals that wouldn't get into many other Championship sides should be.

To think that some on here have suggested that Carson is a potential England keeper, that Curtis Davis could even make the squad, and that Derby could go up in the top 2. Laughable.

We should make the top 6, but it'll be tight. To make that would be a remarkable accomplishment for this side.

Having said that, maybe a losing run is something of a blessing as anything resembling this side would likely repeat 'that' Premiership performance. What do we have at the minute.....maybe one player if that who could step up and play at a higher level.

First League defeat since November 28th. First away League defeat since September. Of course this defeat proves we are crap................ Confused

Of course we don't have the attacking prowess of SM's first squad. We are, however, far more resolute in defence.

The proof of the pudding will be in how we react in the coming games. There may be a defeat or two still to come but there will be wins too. I am backing the side that went on the 2 glorious runs that ended last night to get back on track soon enough to be there or thereabouts for auto promotion come May.

In that case there are 20 teams that have been abysmal...... and we both know that that isn't the case.

I think what you are getting at is that we aren't the same "eye candy" side we have been in recent seasons. In that you are right but eye candy football has perenially failed.

I would like us to take the initiative more. Not the gung ho, devil take the hindmost approach SM had but a balance between that and the maor cautious approach of GR. We currently have a back 7 and a front 4. I would like to see us go 6 an 5.

Yes but they have a coach that can spot and coach good defenders, something McTw*t clearly never understood. Also, Wolves have spent a vast amount of money on their team, recruiting players that are far too good for this league, so much so that if the don't go up this season they are in huge trouble.

Furthermore..if In McClarens 1st season he had the full season ..not just 35 games..we would have been promoted playing a fabulous attacking brand..one that had the crowds coming back in their droves!.. No one would now be saying that it failed..which apart from a mishap in the 90th minute..nearly got us promoted anyway

£35m over 4 years is nothing compared to what Wolves have spent, and are you chosing to forget the £25m we've got back for Hendrick, Ince and Hughes?

No. We've actually spent £57m and recouped £30m. So spent net of £27m over 4 years..but how many have been able to do that at our level?

At least 4 every year with parachute payments. A net spend of just over £7m a year is not extravagant at all, it buys you what, one forward, two defenders maybe.

But ultimately Val, "nearly" wasn't enough. Which is why some folk agree that it was time to try a different approach. There's no arguing it was great to watch, but it didn't get the overall result we were all hoping and aiming for.
OK, SMcC didn't have a full season. Yes, the fans were coming back in droves. And Ok, there was a mishap in the 90th minute. No if's. No buts. No maybe's. No might-have-been's!

Maybe we'll go up now? Maybe this approach will work? Maybe it will take longer than this season to achieve it?
Maybe, in 2 or 3 years time, we'll be saying this approach failed too, so we change things, and go again. Nobody knows what the future holds, or even the present, to a certain degree. But the facts state that the past few seasons failed to achieve the target.

If Mr Clough had not been so headstrong, would it now be us with 2 stars on our shirts, and living in the past?

But that's the point..its bearable but not enjoyable when we win..and a worse when we don't. Entertainment is low with a turgid way of playing..and then we also have to put up with sub standard officials as well.if I wasn't so bloody addicted to football and Derby County I wouldn't bother going. Just hope that it gets better
