Good question Sawls. Let's take a look at the situation. If they were going into the World Cup this summer I would say:

    1. It's a friendly. Managers often use those to have a look at a player or players.
    2. The manager knows Keogh is having, quite possibly, his best ever season for Derby.
    3. Pearce has spent most of the season on the bench, not playing and has made the odd appearance for the U23s. His current form is a complete unknown.
    4. Keogh is going to be one of the first names on the squad sheet.
    5. Pearce has a good chance of going but the manager wants to check on his fitness and form before deciding whether to take him or not

However, Ireland aren't at the World Cup so my chain of thoughts above aren't relevant. Unless.... the manager is following them with a view to next season's squad for the qualifiers.

One last possibility I have thought of, at the tender age of 29, Pearce has decided to stop playing internationals and this is his "gift" for services rendered. An unlikely one but a possibility, nonetheless.

Basically it's a loser's League for nations that failed to qualify for the World Cup. Gives them competitive games that summer and rescues TV companies in the States and elsewhere who have bid and paid for exclusive coverage in their country only to find that their own team hasn't qualified and that means no audience.

Winners/nations that do well in the competition gain automatic qualification to the 2020 Euros.

The Netherlands failed to qualify for Russia 2018. The tournament matches will still be transmitted and there will be large viewing figures, especially once the knock out stage is reached. Not something that would happen in a lot of countries.
