    The 8 game season

Post by Venice Ram on Thu 15 Mar 2018, 3:00 pm

After Sundays game, which I expect us to lose, there will be 5 teams ( 6 if I include Millwall ) playing for the 5th and 6th playoff spots. I have assumed that the top 4 will remain as-is. If results go to form, expect the table to look as follows after Sunday.

    5th M'boro 64 points
    6th Derby 62 points
    7th Sheffield 62 points
    8th Bristol 61 points
    9th Preston 60 points.

We then have the international break, which could not have come at a better time for us, then resume hostilities at home to Sunderland. That kicks off the 8 game season, to decide who takes the remaining playoff spots. Looking at the 8 fixtures for all 5 teams, it's anyones guess, but M'boro under Pulis have to be favourites for 5th position. We have Wolves, Preston, M'boro and Villa

Can we eke out enough points for 6th spot ? And does it influence the team selection for Cardiff, for example do we rest Vydra ?

I would not risk Vydra Sunday.
The week off and the international break will ensure he is fully fit.
Stupid to mess with a groin injury.

We certainly need to buck up our ideas damn quickly, but
our rivals have games they could easily lose, and matches
against each other, which they can't both win.

Sheffield United - Cardiff, Bristol, Preston, Brentford
Bristol - Middlesbrough, Sheffield United, Milwall
    Preston - Derby, Sheffield United

Do we need quite so be so downbeat about our chances?

We're not playing Man City eight times and our rivals for the last two playoff
places aren't playing eight pub teams. We've messed up yet again but there
are enough winnable games left to get back on track.

We're due to play 4 of the 5 weakest teams in the Championship.
If we can't beat those teams and take a point off Boro and/or Preston (two sides
that we've already beaten this season), we won't deserve to be in the playoffs.

    H - . 2nd - 76 pts - their last 6 away = 11 pts - Cardiff
    H - 24th - 28 pts - their last 6 away = . 2 pts - Sunderland
    A - . 9th - 57 pts - their last 6 home = . 8 pts - Preston
    H - 20th - 36 pts - their last 6 away = . 3 pts - Bolton
    A - . 1st - 79 pts - their last 6 home = 13 pts - Wolverhampton
    A - 23rd - 30 pts - their last 6 home = . 2 pts - Burton
    H - . 6th - 61 pts - their last 6 away = 10 pts - Middlesbrough
    A - . 3rd - 69 pts - their last 6 home = 13 pts - Aston Villa
    H - 21st - 33 pts - their last 6 away = . 4 pts - Barnsley

No we don't need to be, but it's hardly a surprise that some fans are less than thrilled with the way things have gone over recent months.

Cruising along at Christmas, it's all gone pear-shaped since the turn of the year. Now we're struggling with injuries and suspensions, and could be in for a torrid afternoon on Sunday.

As Rams fans know from experience, it's the hope that kills you.

    Close, but no cigar.

Boro and Sheff U could only draw, and Boro were probably lucky to get a point.
A vote of thanks for the favour from the trees.
