    McLaren appointed QPR manager

Post by RRC on Sat 19 May 2018, 6:08 am

Steve McClaren is back in English football after being confirmed as the new manager of
Queens Park Rangers. McClaren has joined QPR on a two-year contract and succeeds Ian
Holloway at the helm. The 57-year-old was previously on the coaching staff at Rangers in
2013 before becoming Derby County head coach.

He led the Rams to the Championship play-off final that season, where they were beaten
1-0 by QPR at Wembley. McClaren was sacked by Derby after failure to reach the play-offs
in 2014-15, and went on to have a spell in charge of Newcastle United. The former England
and Middlesbrough chief returned to Pride Park for a second spell in charge following the
departure of Nigel Pearson in October 2016. However, he was dismissed for a second time
in March 2017 and replaced by Gary Rowett.

It seems to me that McClaren's main skill is putting a smile on the faces of players. It's helpful for coming into an under-performing side in mid-season, but isn't a long term solution.

He dropped lucky at Derby as he inherited a very good squad from Nigel. He also had Simmo there to sort out the tactics - 433 and relentless attacking were Simmo's doing from what I hear. Also interesting that Paul Simpson won the U20 World Cup.

I think McClaren's success or failure will come down to his assistant manager and recruitment team. If they can give him the right players and the AM can sort the tactics, leaving McClaren to coach and encourage, he might be OK.

Already linked with Martin for £500k and a move for Jamie Ward

I’d sell at that and get him off the wage bill tbh

He'll do well until Christmas, then when any iota of defensive coaching has finally left the players' brains, they will run around like extras in a Harold Lloyd film.

    Ring any bells?

Well Mcclaren managed to coach Jake Buxton into playing half decent for us...something no other manager has managed to do!
