If he’s as good as is quoted and he won an award this year

Why are we selling him ?

    Are we though?

The rumours started a few weeks back in a local rag in the Gloucestershire area he comes from. Now there are "reports" that he is close to a £1.2M move to West Ham.... in the same local rag.

Following the announcement that GR had done a bunk Thomas tweeted "Not the news we wanted, but can’t thank the gaffer enough for giving me my first breakthrough in football, all the best gaffer"

Those opening 5 words, do they sound like they come from a player about to follow GR out the door?

Maybe Thomas prefers to take his chance in the Premier League now rather than
wait to see whether Derby give him more game time in the first team (we're not
exactly short of forwards) and whether the club ever get promoted.

Trying to hang on to a player who's had a better offer rarely works out.

It seems to be a strong rumour. Here's a piece in a Gloucester website (Thomas
comes from the Gloucester area, he played for Gloucester, and he probably has
family and friends there, who are in a position to know what he wants to do) --

over a million quid for a player who has 2 substitute championship appearances - either he really is good or football has gone nuts (or both)

Aren't we short on forwards? We're about to be left with no one under the age of 30.

Not short of numbers -- promotion quality, fitness and pace, yes, especially if/when Vydra goes.

Here they are with contract expiry dates --

    2019 Cameron Jerome (born 14-08-1986)
    2019 Bradley Johnson (born 28-04-1987)
    2019 David Nugent (born 02-05-1985)
    2019 Andreas Weimann (born 05-08-1991)
    2020 Ikechi Anya (born 03-01-1988)
    2020 Mason Bennett (born 15-07-1996)
    2020 Chris Martin (born 04-11-1988)
    2020 Luke Thomas (born 19-02-1999)
    2020 Matej Vydra (born 01-05-1992)
    2022 Tom Lawrence (born 13-01-1994)

If DCFC was willing to sell Will Hughes for a mere 5m, they certainly will sell Thomas at 1.2m.

Budget on the footballing side will be slashed as many have reported.

As for the non-footballing side, yesterday I wrote a very long post at Reddit about expenses (on the Judo room, multi-millions pound pitch project, the utilization rate of the 5.5 pound per year Moor Farm, and the pointless RamsTV). Coincidently, The Daily Mail reported the following story:

"All departments at Derby, who are set to lose manager Gary Rowett to Stoke, have been told to make cuts with the Championship club said to be losing £3m a month and a £10m-plus financial fair play bill in the offing."

Also said that MeltdownMorris, who has got through six managers in three years and is facing a multi-million- pound High Court battle with former CEO Sam Rush, is increasingly disillusioned with football club ownership.

Meanwhile, it is reported elsewhere that Brentford's Dean Smith is MeltdowMorris's number one target, because of the former's ability to work magic on a tight budget. As someone who knows a bit how the two clubs are run, I doubt Dean Smith would be interested at the DCFC's setup. But we'll see.

Just for the record, I doubt the figures mentioned in the story are real; they probably are excuses department head / MeltdownMorris used when firing people, including a bunch of academy staff as the academy is not producing young talents lol...

I eexpect at least 5 or 6 Academy products to be in the "25 man squad" next season..... dependent on who the new guy is but whoever it is will probably have orders to integrate the likes of Thomas, Guy, Bogle, Vernam, Lowe, Elsnik and have the like of young Max Bird on the fringes....

The Daily Wail story is at best silly season journalism and at best 1% fact IMO. It intimates many are leaving. So far GR had gone and Vicars is retiring but staying on as a director. That is by no means a mass exodus.

The First Team Squad has already been named for the benefit of the Football League --

First-team squad players under contract beyond the summer of 2018:
Scott Carson, Craig Forsyth, Richard Keogh, Ikechi Anya, Tom Lawrence, Andre Wisdom, Bradley Johnson, Alex Pearce, Andreas Weimann, Mason Bennett, Kelle Roos, Matej Vydra, Max Lowe, Jamie Hanson, David Nugent, Marcus Olsson, Cameron Jerome, Curtis Davies, George Thorne, Jonathan Mitchell, Joe Ledley, Tom Huddlestone, Luke Thomas, Jayden Bogle, Chris Martin, Craig Bryson, Jacob Butterfield, Nick Blackman.

Thomas (19) and Bogle (16) were the only young players (under 21) named among the 28.

It's seems likely we'll need to sell before we can give more young players playing time.

Usually we could name the players the club would likely be trying to offload ready for the next season, but seeing as we have no idea who the manager will be or what formation they might play I have no idea. It could be that players such as Martin, Bryson and Blackman suddenly find themselves invited in from the cold.

Martin and Vydra will be gone. Blackman... well, no need to say anything. Nuge and Jerome could manage a season of decent work between them, so count them for one striker but not your twenty-goal season man. The others are forward mids, except Johnson who is really a DM. Difficult to see where much of anything is coming from at this point. Hope the youngsters have some magic.

Factual post. However, it is, IMO, nothing more than a list of those we have under contract at this time. As it is for every other League Club.

There will be a number of those on that list who depart, be it sold or loaned out and their initial replacement, in most cases, will be one of our own and not necessarily a like for like replacement.

For instance, we might sell Keogh, move Wisdom to the back 3 or to CD in a back 4. That would allow us to bring Max Lowe into the squad as left back or left wing back making one of Olsson/Forsyth redundant and available for shipping out. Wheeling and dealing. Lamps could get instructions on that from his Uncle 'Arry Wink

Whoever the new guy is, I hope part of his remit is to make as much use of our Acadaemy products as possible but within reason.

Looks as if Luke Thomas will stay at Derby -- the Lampard effect already?

With one of the most high profile figures in English football now at the helm, teenager
Thomas is looking forward to trying to force his way into the first team at Derby, with
two substitute appearances to his name so far.

“I’ve been on the bench a few times and been lucky enough to make two appearances
so I’m very grateful to all the staff for giving me the opportunity,” Thomas told RamsTV.

“It was brilliant going on to the pitch and playing in front of all the fans. It is definitely
what I aim for now for next season.

“I’ve been part of a matchday squad and made my debut now so hopefully next year I
can make it a regular thing and become a first team player.”
