Derby made four changes to the side that started the original cup tie. Malone, Huddlestone,
Waghorn and Wilson replaced Lowe, Evans, Holmes and Lawrence. There was a welcome
return from injury for Bennett, who was on the subs bench.
          Roos
          Bogle Keogh Tomori Malone
          Mount Huddlestone Bryson
          Waghorn Marriott Wilson
subs Carson Lowe Evans Holmes Bennett Lawrence Nugent
Southampton fielded essentially the same side that started at Pride Park.

The play was open from the start with both sides attacking down their left flanks. Derby's passing was
crisper than in the first half at Pride Park, though the final balls again weren't accurate enough. They
were also quicker to challenge Southampton in midfield. The home side had the first decent shot and
the first corner. and they generally looked more threatening in attack than the Rams, because their
movement forward into space and their passing was quicker. There were plenty of fouls from both teams
and Johnson got the first yellow card for his second rash tackle on 16 minutes. Saints easily cut through
Derby from the left and Roos had to make a fine point blank save, but Long should have scored.

A swift Derby counter-attack opened up the home defence and Wilson laid on a great chance for Mount,
whose shot was high over the bar. Following this, Derby had a good attacking spell, though they did
sometimes leave themselves very open to a fast counter. Quick interplay led to superb pass by Waghorn
and a goal for Bryson, which was eventually ruled millimetres offside after repeated VAR replays. From the
middle of the half, the Rams dominated and they were unlucky not to be ahead.
    HT Southampton 0-0 Derby

Southampton switched from a 3-5-2 formation to 4-4-2 at the start of the second half. Mount missed with
a long shot after a fine pass by Huddlestone. The pattern of play echoed the first half with Saints making
the early running. Redmond forced Roos to make an excellent save but the keeper had no chance with
Armstromg's header on 68 minutes or when Redmond burst through to score in the corner minutes later.

Nugent replaced Marriott on 75 minutes. Wilson's great free kick a minute later brought the Rams back
into the game. Lawrence came on for Huddlestone on 79 minutes and Derby switched to 4-4-2.
As they did at Pride Park, Derby managed to equalize - this time with a brilliant header by Waghorn on
82 minutes from a fine cross by Wilson. The Rams went all out to find a winner and some of the Saints
looked very tired.  The Rams had to do some desperate defending in their box in the 90th minute as
the home side fought hard for a winner. Waghorn put in a fine cross for Lawrence, but Lawrence's header
was too high, like Marriott's late header had been at Pride Park. Redmond made a dangerous cross but
none of the Saints could reach it. So an exciting replay ended like the original cup  tie.
    FT Southampton 2-2 Derby

Extra time was just as open as the rest of the match, though tired legs meant that the spaces were
bigger and support was slower in arriving. Bogle went off after 4 minutes of extra time and was replaced
by Holmes. Saints did most of the attacking and Tomori was prominent in stopping them. Throughout the
match Tomori was a rock in defence for Derby. Bennett came on for Wilson on 102 minutes. A long throw
by Holmes was headed on by Nugent but Lawrence's header was too high again and he also missed with
a drive. At the other end Roos made a brilliant save from Redmond on111 minutes. There were more
chances but nobody could find the net.
    ET Southampton 2-2 Derby

    Penalties, Derby first
    Waghorn 1 Ward-Prowse 1 - Nugent 2 Redmond (missed) 1 - Mount 3 Vestergaard 2
    Lawrence 4 Targett 3 - Keogh 5 - Derby win.

Ralph Hurdy Gurdy out foxed us tactically at half time, but we had enough ability and bravery to win.

Frank has only one option with his current fit squad - go 424 against 442 and outplay them.

    ...and we did.

Waghorn has to start every game, we never look balanced without him, and always look better with him in the team. Bogle looked a lot sharper than he has done recently and Mount was another who looked like he was finding some form again.

Lets see if we can carry it on in our traditional bogey game, Reading at home

Yeah, I noticed that. I don't get the Keogh hate at present. He's had his moments of calamity, but the games we've lost this year have been the fault of our feeble midfield not the centre-halves, with the possible exception of our first drubbing at the Dirties' hands.

RK played to his max tonight. There were other players whom I'd have preferred to take our fifth penalty, but I would have not criticised him had he missed, because he has the heart of a lion.

Unfortunately, he also has the brain of a scarecrow.

To be fair NER, Keogh doesn't get hatred at the games, most fans who go to the games balance the good things he does against the mistakes he makes and get behind him.

For 25 minutes, Soton were like Leeds. Pressing high and forcing us into mistakes. It then seemed we pushed our front 3 onto their back 3 giving a 3 on 3 situation. They countered by pulling their 2 wide midfielders back which gave us a numerical advantage in MF which we made good use of but, unfortunately couldn't find the back of the net except for that one second when Waghorn was half a gnat's knacker offside which was enough to rule out Bryson's goal thanks to VAR.

The 2nd half mirrored the first. They started the better, we finished the better. Their 1st started with Wilson being fouled out wide, ref didn't give it and the ball ended up in the net. They did look at VAR for the goal but didn't review the Wilson incident..... Their 2nd started with Hudds losing the ball in the centre circle when surrounded by 4 of them. Lovely move followed and Redmond chipped it beautifully over Roos.

That was the point that the Duracell batteries took hold of things. The energy was immense, the workrate excellent and the football was top drawer. We deserved the 2 goals we got to get back into it. VAR was again used on our 2nd goal which proved no Derby player was offside due to a stuck out foot from a Saints defender. In the end, the correct result was reached in both the Bryson goal and the Wilson goal. I would, however, question its use in both cases. The rules for the use of VAR are to correct CLEAR AND OBVIOUS mistakes. IMO, neither instance was clear or obvious so VAR should not have been used.

Extra time could have seen it go either way but neither side managed to beat their opponents keeper. On to Penalties. On to a repeat of Old Trafford. We win. On to Accrington where they are the underdogs and the game will be televised by BT Sport.

Tomori has been lauded all over the net and well he should based on that performance. I would also like to mention Kelle Roos. 5 seasons at Derby and this was his 8th competitive first team game. He has been loudly criticised and doubted in internet fora for much of his stay at Derby. In his 2 most recent games, both against Soton in the Cup, he has let 4 goals in. He could have done nothing about those but did pull off some excellent saves. His performances in those 2 games should have eliminated people's concerns about him being good enough for the bench. So...... well done Kelle Roos.

The "rest" also seems to have reinvigorated Bogle.

..... and, yes, Tomori was our MOTM.

For those unsure of the correct pronunciation of Kelle's surname, it rhymes with the surname of former England cricketer Brian Close.
