    Similar to Barnstaple Ram.

Parents split up, Grandad was a Ram, went with him and never looked back. I still go with him on occasion, although now the South West has got a bit tame, and will be moving to the SE next year.

Born in Derby moved to Northampton, parents split up. Dad moves back to Derby - Andy goes to dads - Dad takes Andy to football - Andy likes this. Now go with my cousin and a couple of mates i know through him.

I grew up being told to support Derby, but never really appreciated it until I went to games. I had a Season Ticket with my Dad for 8 years but then got bored of him so moved to South East with a lad I know from school

It just happened really Dad takes you to a 1968 Baseball Ground game there was only ever going to be one outcome given the atmosphere and the football that was being played back then......you were hooked for life.

Thank you all for adding your stories.
"The ones I feel sorry for are those that can not understand the anticipation, the passion, the drama, the excitement, they really do miss out."COYR
That, I think, is the main message of these stories.
I work at a school where most football fans are "sky supporters" of big teams They miss out totally on the drama and cannot deal with defeat.
Bit of a side issue, but I helped my daughter understand maths by using the league table. " O.k. It's 1 point for a draw and 3pts for a win.Derby win the next 2 games. How many extra points will they get?"
Great way to teach the 3times table when we are winning!

I was expecting the next sentence to be that your daughter replied "Dont be silly Daddy, they wont beat Sheffield United!" :lol!:

She probably did! Rose-tinted memories! But some kids don't get 3+0=3 so, some progress! Still reckon we will win 2-1 this weekend. That's the other thing isn't it- we predict/expect wins all the time but, after a few days, accept defeat/explain defeat.

    My story is slightly different.

All my family has grown up in Derbyshire and my dad and brother both supported Derby.

I, for some reason, decided not to and for until I was 7, I said I was a fan of Liverpool. I never followed any of their trnasfers or results and I think the only reason I said that was to be different.

Then I came to my senses on one boxing day. Every boxing day, I celebrate another year of supporting Derby and I deeply regret my foolish days of stupidity

I remember when i was little and i wasn't really supporting any team. I just loved playing football! My dad grew up in Laaandon, and supported Arsenal as a boy. He then moved to Middlbrough and followed them. When he moved to Derbyshire he started going to occasional games but was still an Arsenal fan. He then stopped going altogether (late 80s i think) so i didnt have any parental pressure on me.

The time when i started supporting Derby was when i was flicking through tv channels and saw Clive Wijnard (or something like that :P) scoring for L*eds past Arsenal (Seaman ran out of goal, Dixon stud on the line but Wijnard beat him with Seaman hopeles)...i then rushed through to the kitchen and asked mum who the nearest team were, she said Derby and i replied "i'll support them then" :) Not sure how old i was, probably about 4.

Since then, i got my first season ticket in 98 i think (shared though as we couldnt afford a whole one so split it between my dads friends+family and us), the next year the ratio was halved as it was split between 2 families, not 4 (the others loved it so much they got their own tickets) so i went to more. The season after, i got my first real season ticket and have hardly missed a home game since! :)

Im just glad my mum didnt say Belper Town were closest! :P

The Life of a Derby Fan.

    Starts as a hobby.
    Becomes a job.
    Ends an Illness.
    Ah, c'est la vie.

As a child I had little to no interest in football, but having caught Sheffield Wednesday winning a live match I began following them (not supporting, may I add in haste to save face). My Dad and Uncle, season ticket holders since the early-70s, were having none of this and took me to the Derby/Sheff Wed FA Cup Q/F of 1993, convinced the BBG and everything with it would tie my flag to the mast of the mighty Rams. It did, and I've never looked back. Although the club has given me plenty of times when I've wanted to, even in just 15 years.

Family influence for me as well.
Mum, Dad and big brother all Derby mad (Derbyshire cricket as well but not to the same extent).
Started in the pop side with parents when I was 5 or 6 then graduated to the boy's enclosure in the Normanton end (don't suppose anyone on here's old enough to remember that).
Funny, in the early days under Harry Storer and Tim Ward we were stuck in Division 2, nver looked like getting promoted or relegated, but everybody was happy with that - how times change.
    I don't think it's really a hobby, it's more of an obsession.
Probably missed less than 10 home games in the last 45 years.
Away games have been patchy. Will go to every one for 2 or 3 years then the next season go to about 6.
I suppose I'm one of the fortunate ones in that the missus has never expected me to miss a match, home or away, in our 34 years of marriage.

    Any way, roll on retirement.
Football in winter, cricket in summer - heaven.

OK hands up all those who are thinking 'What a sad b**tard'
