    English Goalkeepers.

Post by New England Ram on Sun Jun 13, 2010 10:28 pm

Shilton Clemence Parkes Corrigan... (Bonetti ...)

    Robinson...James ...Green...Carson....

Top line pre specialized goalkeeper coaches

    Bottom line specialized goalkeeping coaches.

Now i know there are lots of variables involved we are playing with 50 pence Woolworths footballs and all that good stuff.

But for all those years we had some of the best goalkeepers around i doubt there was a recognized goalkeeping coach to be seen...a role given little thought to back in those days.

It seems though since ex goalkeepers have been given a chance to pass on their experience and work with todays keepers that Englands talent in that department has gradually started to look very average.

I am not saying it is the coaching just making an observation...but why are we no longer producing top class..world class goalkeepers.

Why are English keepers now mentioned in the same breath as Scottish keepers or Gary Sprake...what happened ?

(Sure Amster will have a view on this one)

Because we metricised everything, so height, weight, hand span, command, communication, leg length, body weight gravity ratio became more important than ability

It's the The Prem again - most of the keepers in the Prem are imports.

Our promising young keepers (and young players in any position) don't get the chance to hone their skills against the best every week.

Playing regularly with and against top class players is the only thing that would help our young players improve.

Choice of three - what if we had a choice of 10, 15 or even 20 English keepers from the Prem?

How many foreign keepers were there in the old First Division when the keepers you named were playing?

We need more competition for the England jersey, and more chance of one or more cracking keepers emerging.

You get no argument from me regards the Prem and the effect its had on the English game Jo.
But i would still think the few we have would still be of better standard especially as their training is now goalkeeping training as opposed to "get in the net son" type of stuff.

Easy peasy. There has been a long line of decent young English keepers who came up through the age group ranks and performed well for England from U12 to U21. They then failed to get a chance at senior level in the PL because most clubs there have Johnny Foreigner between the sticks.

Some even get dropped in favour of their 197 year old coach........

I agree with all of this and I also think that since around about Bonetti's time more and more of our keepers have seemed like they're trying to copy the continental keepers far too much, wanting to punch everything in front of them even what I think seem relatively easy catches right in front of them. I also strongly believe that all this extra protection they get now days has definitely weakened there game. Before all the mollycoddling a keeper would rush out and plough through everything in front of him to make the ball his, nowdays he knows he hardly has to move and if anybody breathes too heavily on him he'll get a foul.
I'm afraid until all of the points above are addressed we wont be breeding any true world class keepers like we were well known for in the past.

I will say the one type of player the US is known for producing in quality is Goal Keepers. I don't really know why we seem to produce them but we do.

Its quite simple really Calif becuase the game you call football allows players to use there hands all the time so the US produces players who can catch a ball.

Now the clever part is why call a game in which you mainly carry, throw and catch the ball feckin FOOTBALL

That is a good point NER, kids in the States play a lot of different sports before they pick on they really like, basketball, baseball, soccer, football ect. All those sports would develop different skill sets that are key to a good Keeper.

They always say that if you throw a ball to an American kid they'll catch it whereas if you throw it to an English kid they'll trap it on their chest etc.

Who "they" are I've no idea but they have never thrown a ball to Titus Bramble obviously as he'd trip over it.
