    TABLES AND SPREADSHEETS

Post by Mucker1884 on Tue 11 Jan 2011, 2:40 pm

Ok, I've sussed out how to insert a table, simply by clicking on the appropriate icon, to do this:

    DCFCNotts Co Burton
    53.7 2.1
    Blah 1 Blah2  Blah 3
BTW, this is just a demo and means diddly!!

Fair enough.  But it seems very slow and finneky to fill in etc (Here in this Reply Box thingy).

Now I'm guessing I can do either an MS Excel worksheet here on my PC, and/or a similar worksheet on line in my Google Documents doodah, and then put it on here.  I just haven't got a clue how.

I've managed to get a link on here, which linked you to a spread work sheet on my Google Docs, but I didn't like that.  Firstly it meant clicking a link, instead of having the table on full view, and secondly, it gave everyone instant access to all my google docs and email etc, so I'm not keen!!

Any tips will be appreciated, but please note that this is for future reference/curiosity only.  I've not got anything planned....exciting or otherwise!!  Embarassed

I don't see why all the youngsters should have all the fun, and I'm in the mood to (try to) learn summat!

    :fb11:

PS  Any attempt to belittle me and/or my intelligence over this matter, due to it being "Oh, so simple" will be met with a wall of silence, as I've heard it all before (Top of page......bottom of page!!!), so don't waste yer breath!!   :whis:

do it on excel - highlight the cells you want to put into the forum and click on copy

then go to http://tableizer.journalistopia.com/ and paste the cells into the big box

click on tableize and it takes you to a screen which has a grey box with the script and a preview of the table. Right click on the script - select all then right click again and copy.

Paste the script into the reply box and its done.

This is the method I use, but I cannot get the background for the header row to show up. If you have a table to paste with no headers then copy a blank row above the table in excel, otherwise the first row wont have column separators.

I tried that and it didnt work for me - do you need to have borders on it or have it formatted as a table

Right, I did it Dav's way. Piece of pi55. Ended up as a table (with box border's showing), but it ignored coloured font and background.

Doing it Li's way, it just showed up as if I'd typed directly into reply box. Neat enough, but no table, no nuffink. So now, I need this toggle the editor mode thingy explaining. The only BigA little A I can find is at the top of the reply box, and it changes font size!

the last button on the bottom row of icons on the editor box, hit tht and it gets a reed background

then paste it in the reply box

just been trying - doesnt alwayas copy the colours for me but most of the time it does.

Right, when I click Add Reply, I see the A you refer to, but only for about a second, then it disappears and is replaced by all the other icons (insert pic/font colour/Bold etc)

Oh, just seen Davs pic......I don't have those last two boxes, mine finishes with the ?Help Box

If you copy from excel the colours are only kept if it is formatted as a table in excel.

If you copy to word first and then copy to the reply box you keep all colours no matter what.

    test

but the posts get big very quickly and every one I have tried comes up with post too big. I think I will stick with plain boring tbales or tableizer

Each time I click on 'Edit' or 'Add reply', that very button to which you refer shows up, all on it's own, top left (Where your 'Bold' button is) but disappears within about a second, and is replaced by the two full rows, as previously described.

Then we need Alvoman on the job.
It has to be something around your googles that needs tweaking.

There is an alternative way to do it, try this (no pretty colours though)
    Copy paste your excel sheet
open insert table on reply box
    set table at 1x1
copy excel sheet into table, take care to get the cursor in the very thin box

report to me, tell me what happens I will give you further instructions

That last one - When I click Insert table - 1x1 - OK, it just puts text and brackets into the reply box. I don't actually see a table, nor do I see "a very thin box".

I'm guessing that's something to do with Chrome aswell?

Anyway, you guys have been great, but I feel like I'm impeding on your valuable time, and in all honesty, I don't even have plans to put this to good use, as yet. Was just in the mood to learn a new skill!!

I'm quite nifty with excel sheets (at work) and use them quite a lot. Keeps things tidy, does all your calcs & formats for you, and you can make them reasonably presentable.
There's summat similar in Google Docs, which I've just started using. And I thought this might be the next step.

All the help is very much appreciated, but I hate to steal peoples valuable time, so only help me if you're bored!!
